This is me, The Rat...partner since 2001 to Concrete_Man, mum to Rat_Girl (born 13.12.05) and Rat_Boy (born 14.05.09). Co-inhabiting our nest are 2 rather large fury 4 legged rats, Boxer_Dog and Black_Dog. We run a business from the nest with Concrete_Man doing the manly physical work while I stay at home and do the 'other' stuff. This means we are often busy, often stressed and often very tired...but then again who isn't! Anyway that's enough for now. As time goes by you will learn a bit more about the family that is "MummaRat's Nest"

Fit Friday 26/02/2010


Well it's the last Fit Friday in Feb, and although no one has posted I hope a few people have started to get active and got even just a little Fit in Feb.

Fit Fridays have helped me stay a little more focussed and a little more motivated to get moving. So I'm going to continue them and I'm going to March my way through March.  So I'm going to dig out the pedometer and start counting my steps.  Feel free to join on in.

So what happened this week...had a few disappointments and a couple set backs. Monday I arrived for Mum & Bubs aqua and drove around and could not see anyone there.  Apparently I was the only one that turned up, the trainer was there I just didn't see her...so I turned around and went home.  Then Tuesday I woke up sick, with gastro so no exercise Tues or Wed.  Ah well I still got a little bit in.

Saturday - Wii fit EA Sports Active, 30mins
Sunday - Aqua aerobics (and it was a tough tough tough workout) - part of my weight loss challenge
Monday - Failed Mums & Bubs aqua, always next week
Tuesday - sick
Wednesday - sick
Thursday - Mowed the lawn (jungle) 1hour ...silly though in the middle of a summers day
Friday - Boxing class (am) Pump class (pm) - part of my weight loss challenge

Valentines Day (catch up post :-) )

I do agree with the masses that valentines day is a halmark holiday, I've never really been into expensive dinners and sending roses and buying cards etc.  I think Concrete_man and I had one expensive valentines day but it was because he had been away for work for 5 weeks leading up to it.

Anyway this year I made a little effort and had some fun with food.

So for breakfast we had pancakes, excuse the ones that look a little burnt...I get a little distracted sometimes.




We also had heart shaped sandwhiches for lunch, but they weren't worth photgraphing.

Then for dinner...we again made our own ravioli...it took 2 takes though as I botched the first batch, opps.

Served with the usual bolognese sauce, baby spinach and onion salad.



We had pavlova for dessert too, but I think for the time being you've seen enough of my pavlovas.  Though I'm making one this weekend and might make it just a little different.

Fit Fridays 19/02/10


**Not sure what happened here.  I had a freak out Friday night when I realised I hadn't posted this, the driving home at midnight I remembered I set it up  as an 'auto' post...and it's taken me till NOW to realise it never auto posted**
This week's exercise hasn't been as full on as last weeks but I still believe it was a pretty good effort.

Last weeks exercise ended with a 'mystery' class at the gym as part of my weight loss challenge, well as it turned out it was a circuit clas and O M G was it tough but it was also heaps of fun.  The ladies from the challenge are great all of them are lovely and great fun to work out with.  This week we're doing aqua or dance fit so I'll fill you in on them later.

So this is what I got up to this week

Saturday -mowed the lawn (ran it to try to avoid the rain) still took me over 1hour!
Sunday - 30min treadmill interval training
Monday - EA Sports Active 29 mins, plus another 15mins sports workout (heaps fun!!) Ab work out (i'll be adding more to my abs soon)
Tuesday - 20min treadmill interval training, abs
Wednesday - Red arrow with the added weight of a 10.5kg 9month old baby on my back! I went for a second lap around but wasn't going to make it.  For those that don't know the red arrow, it's a bush walk up hill and it's mostly stairs. It's only 1.3klm round trip butit's 1.3klm of torture!
Thursday - EA Sports 30mins
Friday - BOXING class YAY this is my most favourite, anticipated and best work out of the week.  I work harder in boxing than any other exercise I do.

So looking forward to next week....

Challenge work out on Sunday (dance fit or aqua) (**edited as this is posted late, we did aqua!)
Mums and Bubs Aqua starts again on Monday
I'm keen for the red arrow on Wednesday (and possibly looking to add it in as a regular weekend exercise also)
And another mystery challenge class on Friday arvo, if I can make it all depends on concrete_man and work.

So there you go, all in all not too bad. Well that is if you don't count the fact my legs were that sore from the red arrow on Wednesday I could hardly walk for 2 days!

Fit Friday 11/02/10


Welcome to the second week of Fit Friday. I'm hoping that you have been able to get moving just a little more in the last week.  I've certainly been motivated to do more exercise this week.

Here's what I've been up to the last week.

Saturday - day off
Sunday - Red arrow attempt - we still did a walk and did some hills but my walking partner slipped and hurt her ankle part way up so we turned around and came back
Monday - Failed aqua - stupid borken traffic lights made me miss it! Wii EA Active 22mins, Ab king - 2 x 10ea of crunches, left obliques, right obliques
Tuesday - 20mins interval training on treadmill, Wii EA Active 29mins, Ab king - 2 x 10ea of crunches, left obliques, right obliques
Wednesday - Ab king 2 x 10ea of crunches, left, obliques, right obliques
Thursday - 30min internal training on treadmill , Ab king 2 x 10ea of crunches, left, obliques, right obliques
Friday - Right now I'm heading off to a boxing class on on the gorgeous esplanade.  This afternoon I'm heading to the gym for a mystery work out as part of my weight loss chellenge, sounds exciting right? I'll fill you in on the details later.

A proud moment

Yesterday when Rat_girl went to kindy she took with her a show and tell it was a print out with photos of her jewellery box and hanger that she had made with a little story on how she made them.

She got up and read (well made the words up) to her class and then afterwards those that wanted to, got an egg carton each and she showed them how to make a hanger!!  How adorable is that!  I spoke to the teacher and she told me she actually stood there teaching all the other kids.

Ofcourse all they ended up doing was painting an egg carton each but she was so proud of herself and it was all she talked about last night.  And then this morning when I dropped her off again her show and tell and pictures of her teaching the other kids were up on the wall and she was very excited.

Weekend Craftiness

A jewelry hanger made by Rat_girl and I


I'd been painting a couple of my projects and she was bugging me because she wanted to paint.  I was originally going to just give her the egg cartons to paint and be done with it.

Then decided on helping her make a pin board....which then ended up a jewelry hanger.

Now I would like one for me, but I think I'll make mine from corkboard or something.

My first attempt at homemade pasta

Firstly I need to apologise for the photo.  My camera was flashing battery warning so I grabbed Concrete_man's camera managed to snap off just 1 photo as he was pulling his plate away from me!


I've never made pasta before, let alone ravioli, but for a first attempt with not many tools I think I did ok.

The verdict I think m dough was a little dry and even thought I rolled it out as thin as I could I think it was still a little thick.  But it got eaten so that is the main thing.  For the filing I just boiled and mashed some vegies and mixed with some egg and breadcrumbs to help it stick...no idea if that was the right thing to do but it tasted fine.  Rat_boy enjoyed sucking the centre out of his ravioli

Concrete_man is really only a fan of bolognese sauce so that is what it was topped with....that part was delish!  Thank god I made enough to freeze. 

I definatley want to give it another go, I really love the idea of making pasta myself.

Fit Friday 05/02/10


Welcome to the first Fit Friday...this is what I've been up to this week.

I have to admit it's not as much as I had hoped for the first week, but every little bit counts.

Monday - Mum and Bubs water workout with both kids for resistance!!! Plus (my newest workout addition) Ab King Pro (lol) 2 x 10reps each of Crunches and Oblique Crunches
Tuesday - 40min Wii workout, Ab King workout
Wednesday - 30min Wii workout all cardio,
Thursday - Ab King Workout and played Wii with Rat_girl for about an hour
Fri- Well I haven't planned that yet but I'll included what I do today in next weeks wrap.

How do I feel about what I've done this week, pretty slack actually.  In comparison to the last few weeks I think I could have done more.

Today I'm going to have a real think of what I can achieve exercise wise in a week and try to set an exercise schedule and stick to it!

A Wednesday in the life of ME!

This is post dedicated to some lovely ladies I met online while pregnant with Rat_boy.

Here is my last 24hours...

Oh first, last the last bit of Tuesday night to lead in...

7pm - Rat_boy in bed, slighty later than normal but no biggie
830pm - Rat_girl in bed, way later than normal she bargain a bed time story for So You Think You Can Dance
930pm - Rat_boy wakes for a quick cuddle and back to sleep
11pm as I'm heading to bed Rat_boy wakes for a small feed and straight back to sleep
1am - Rat_girl arrives in my bed, Rat_boy wakes for another quick feed, resettling didn't work
230am - Rat_boy awake again, just for cuddles
4am - Rat_boy wakes for a big feed and back to sleep

6am - wake with Rat_girl in my bed crying that she misses her dad, Rat_boy is also awake playing in his cot.  Rat_boy has a quick feed (even though he only woke a couple hours before and had a feed) while Rat_girl dresses herself for kindy. 

Kids eat breakfast at the breakfast bar while I run around having my breakfast, doing some laundry, cleaning up, checking bags and lunch boxes, yelling at Rat_girl "put the toys down and eat your breakfast, get back up at the table, stop spilling your food everywhere"

Clean up the kids, don't bother cleaning up the breakfast dishes, dress Rat_boy, feed the dogs, give them some water and the medication, lock up the house...Rat_boy screaming and clawing at my top again, look at time, it's almost 8am where did the last 2hours go! Feed him load into the car for kindy.

830 On the road to the mechanic to the soundtrack of Rat_boy screaming.  Screaming stops as I pull up at mechanic, he fell asleep, hmmm bad timing.  Try to fit car seat ino NanaRats car, lots of swearing involved, move rat_boy into the seat, wake him up, yep SCREAMING!!

915 30mins late check in car for service, lose the plot at them because they say it won't be ready till 3pm...I talk them down to 1pm.

Head to aircon shops, Rat_boy hysterical in the car, sit for coffee and boob umm feed and play.  The groceries.  Rat_boy sat in his pram looking very tired but stayed awake the whole time.

Did some craft shopping, had lunch shared it with Rat_boy.  Fed Rat_boy again as he was screaming the shops down.

He then falls asleep driving back to the mechanics.  Succesfully move him from one car to the other and keep him asleep for the collecion of groceries and the drive home maybe an hour in total, until my street where he wakes up hysterical.  AGAIN another feed as he is trying to crawl into my top.

Unpack groceries while he follows me around screaming, put him in his high chair with some foods to play with...all while screaming!!!  While I continue to put groceries way.

430pm OMG when did that sneak up on me.  Drive (2 second down the road too hot to walk) pick up Rat_girl.  
Home to give the kids dinner, Rat_girl had 2 min noodles and thankfuly Rat_boy had sweet and sour chicken that was in the freezer.

520pm Had enough of Rat_boy's screaming, put him in the bath, Rat_girl eventually joined us!!!

535pm He's lost the plot again, feed him on the bathroom floor while he's nude, wet and in a towel.

by 555pm we're out in the lounge all kids dressed waiting for Alf to start.  My god Rat_boy is still screaming so I just feed him again.

Finally now it's 641pm and Rat_girl is doing her usual fridge raid even though she's already had dinner, Rat_boy is crawling around creating havoc and we're wathcing Full House.

The rest of our night is a play by ear while we wait for Concrete_man to arrive home, at this stage his plane arrives at 730...

Kids Craft Corner

I'm attempting to plan a craft style activity once a week with Rat_girl, this was yesterdays creation...

She took the first three photos herself :-)

She was very chuffed with the finished result
It was a Woodworks kit by http://www.colorific.com.au/ and was quite easy.  She needed a little assistance from me but all that really was, was direction where to paint the glue I then helped with the assembly it's a bit fiddly.

She did all the painting, with little help or direction and she decorate with stickers.  i even threw in a little bling from my craft kit.


I'll have photos updates of the kids soon, maybe tonight once they are in bed and I'm sitting watching Greys as concrete_man is away!

Menu Plan Mondays - on hold for a little

Menu Plan Mondays are on hold for a little bit while I try out a new routine with shopping and meal planning.

I'm going to try to start shopping in bulk once a month and only going to the grocery store for fruit and veg.  We have a couple bulk food places here that apparently are cheaper than the supermarkets.  So I'm going to do a big shop there stock up on as much as I can, then shop at the butchers and buy cuts that are on special or that look good etc.  Then I will work out the menus for the month based on the items I've got at home rather than the other way around.  I'm going to try doing it this way to save time as I won't need to do the big weekly grocery shop.

I figure it's the start of the month so it's a good time to start.

Lets get Fit in Feb

So to celebrate the start of my weight loss blog and to help motivate me to keep exercising and do well in my weight loss challenge I amd launching FIT FRIDAYS at Mummarat's Nest.

I'm going to run them through February and if they prove popular I'll continue.  For some reason I find that motivating others is the best motivator for me.

Here is how it will work.

During the month of February I want everyone to get active, I don't care how, it can be planned exercise like walking or gym or it can be incidental exercise like yard work or house work either way it's exercise.

Each Friday I will post here what exercise I've done for the week, how I'm feeling etc and ofcourse I'll keep you up to date with the progress of my weight loss at The Shrinking Rat.

And then what you need to do is get active, blog about it each Friday, come visit my blog and leave a comment with a link to your blog (I'm working on trying to set up a MR Linky system).  Don't forget to put a link back to my blog so others can follow. If you don't have a blog just come by and just leave a comment letting everyone know what you've been up to for the week.

Make sure and spread the word, the more the merrier...

The wonderful Susan at Dragon's Musings (she is amazing and knocked them up over night just about!!) made up some banners and buttons if you would like to use them on your blog let me know and I'll put them up.
